Golf Vacations on Par

Golf Vacations on Par

Cancun – also known as the Mexican Caribbean − may not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a golf vacation, but you may be surprised to find that this tourist town has some of the most challenging, breathtakingly beautiful golf courses in the world. One of the top golf courses in Mexico, Playa Mujeres Golf Club, hosted the 2009 Celebrity Golf Invitational tournament and was was rated by Golf Publishing International as the 8th best of Mexico’s 220 golf courses.

Golf Course Design

Professional golfers have played in Cancun for years, having discovered long ago that this is an ideal location for designing championship golf courses. Today, many professional golf courses proudly reflect the names of famous golfers: Greg Norman, Robert Trent Jones Jr., P.B. Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Price, Robert Von Hagge, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Fazio, and Isao Aoki.

The unusual natural landscaping, rich tropical vegetation, sunshine and warmth make the Mexican Caribbean an ideal place for golf course development. Its natural terrain produces the finest golf greens and fairways with rolling hills, sinkholes (cenotes), sand traps, and views of the Caribbean Sea and Nichupte Lagoon. Some even incorporate remnants of ancient Mayan ruins such as the Cancun Golf Club at Pok-ta-Pok and Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort.

Cancun Golf Courses

Cancun Golf Club at Pok-ta-Pok – Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. in 1976, this competitive, par 72, 18-hole golf course is 7,051 yards long, and strategically developed around Mayan ruins with dazzling views of Nichupte Lagoon. Located in the hotel zone on the lagoon side of Kukulcan Boulevard, the course is only several blocks from some of the finest luxury hotels and golf resorts in the area.

Playa Mujeres Golf Club – Designed by golf professional Greg Norman in 2006, this leading par 72, 18-hole golf course is 7,260 yards long and has been distinguished as one of the best by the Executive Women’s Golf Association (EWGA). With beautiful views of the Caribbean Sea and Isla Mujeres, this eco friendly course includes tropical rainforests, white sand traps, water holes, and bunkers, and is located north of Cancun on Bonampak Avenue near Punta Sam.

The region has received international acclaim for its professional golf courses − with even more to come!

Golf Course Developments

The Caiman at Puerto Cancun − This 18-hole, competitive golf course being designed by Tom Weiskopf will span 185 acres of seaside land in the hotel zone along the marina. Passing through an ecological reserve, it will have winding fairways, strategic green placement, water obstacles, sand traps, and tough bunkers. Located in Puerto Cancun, this course will include a driving range, practice green plus a clubhouse, restaurant, and pro golf shop.

Cancun Country Club − This expansive property will have two 18-hole, championship golf courses meeting TPC (Tournament Players Course) standards and PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour specifications. One is being designed by golf course architect Tom Fazio and the other by golf professional Nick Price. Located five minutes from Cancun International Airport, it will feature the largest driving range in Latin America (10 hectares) plus a golf academy.

Cancun has become a favorite spot to take golf vacations for both professionals and amateurs, not only for its stunning tropical scenery but also for its challenging courses that meet exceptional design standards.
